911 Flag

I attached a picture picture of me sewing a stitch to repair the 911 flag that flew at the Trade Center in NYC. I probably wouldn't have been able to do this in NYC, but since Montana doesn't have huge crowds, I was able to participate. My camera didn't work very well, so I actually got to make 3 stitches to get the picture.

The flag that was nearly destroyed on Sept. 11 2001 when the Trade Center came down is being taken across the nation by the New York Foundation so that people from every state can help restore it. Once it is restored, the flag will be used in 10th Anniversary of 911 ceremonies later this year, and will become part of the permanent collection of the National September 11 Memorial Museum being built at the site of the World Trade Center.

The ceremony in Montana was held in the State Capital Rotunda and was organized by the Montana Historical Society, it began with selected Montana heroes stitching a flag that was flown over our State Capitol into the 911 flag. Lt. Gov. John Bohlinger and Denny Deters of the New York Says Thank You Foundation spoke at the event. A formal presentation of the colors, a Native American Honor Song by the Togendowangan Society on the Freedom Drum, and a bagpipe tribute by Beth Foster was part of the ceremony. The portion of the flag repaired by Montana was the top white stripe located on the distal edge of the flag. The original white stripes are gray because of the smoke from the towers.
